roseate spoonbill

The Roseate Spoonbill is found along the south Florida coast from the Florida Keys north to Tampa.

No other bird has a similar bill.

Their numbers were severely depleted by plume hunters around 1940 to make ladies fans,

but with preservation laws and places like Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge

(where this series of shots were taken) populations have increased once again.

Their wingspan is a magnificent 50 inches.

They feed on fish and aquatic invertebrates (like crabs) by sweeping their bills back and forth.

Spoonbills are closely related to the Ibis.
